2013 Racers for Tots
12/26/13...Racers for Tots announced that 2013 was another record setting year for its annual Christmas toy drive to help needy and under privileged children in Western Pennsylvania. Thousands of toys were collected making it the biggest year in the 15 year history of Racers for Tots and a local charity received unexpected assistance from Racers for Tots when a flood destroyed the toys they had collected just days from Christmas.
“We want to thank everyone for all of the toys that were donated this year to the Racers for Tots program and tickets that were purchased for the Rocket racecar. The racing community and community at large came together in record numbers and we can’t thank everyone enough” said Racers for Tots organizer Jimmy Steigerwald.
Racers for Tots was started in 1999 by Steigerwald, a race official at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, as a way to help children, who through unfortunate circumstances would wake up Christmas morning with few or no gifts.
The week prior to Christmas the Salvation Army of Monessen was flooded and the toys they had collected were destroyed. Hearing the plea for help, Racers for Tots and Organizer Jimmy Steigerwald and the Racers for Tots crew were the first to spring into action donating toys and 12 bicycles that had been collected.
“The Salvation Army was surprised and thrilled to get the toys we gave them and it helped them immensely” stated Steigerwald “That’s what Racers for Tots is all about, giving to those in need at Christmas and they were completely surprised and thankful”.
Throughout the race season Racers for Tots conducts a raffle at local speedways and businesses for a brand new Rocket dirt race car (less motor and transmission) in which a $10.00 donation gives you an opportunity to win the racecar given away at the World Finals at the Dirt Track at Charlotte in November. Bill Fore of Granitville, SC was the winner of the racecar.
Additional fundraising efforts included a March bingo at the Carnegie Volunteer Fire Hall, a summer golf outing at the Ponderosa Golf Course in Burgettstown and chances to win raffles were available.
In 2011, Racers for Tots partnered with the Chartiers Valley Parents Teacher Group (PTG) and the Chartiers Valley Primary School in Collier, Township, PA and the schools kindergarten through second grade classes adopted Racers for Tots as the school's charity.
Kellie Albert of the PTG spearheaded the effort and this year brought in the entire Chartiers Valley School District and more than 2,000 students collected toys for Racers for Tots. Word out is that a challenge is being established between Chartiers Valley and South Fayette School District for the 2014 Racers for Tots toy drive. More information will be forthcoming on the challenge.
Racers for Tots concluded its 2013 toy drive with a Christmas party at the South Fayette (PA) Firehall in December with attendees donating a new unwrapped toy or $10.00 for admission to the party.
Racers for Tots is gearing up for the 2014 Christmas toy drive and race season
with a brand new Rocket racecar that could possibly debut for Florida Speedweek.
Racers for Tots will again hold the bingo in March at the Carnegie Fire Hall as well as another in October. The golf outing is also on the calendar for the end of July.
